Afghanistan's First Free Community Pharmacy

We’re raising funds to open Kabul’s first free community pharmacy in a country where many families have no means to purchase basic medication. This pharmacy will offer essential medicines — pain relievers, antibiotics, asthma inhalers, prenatal vitamins, insulin — at no cost to patients.

In Afghanistan, when going to a doctor, all patients have to pay a copayment. They are then prescribed medication which they also would need to purchase from a pharmacy. A 2024 study by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that 2 in 3 Afghans skip or delay needed treatment due to cost. By providing free over the counter and prescription based medication, we are making treatment more affordable for families. As patients begin to come to the pharmacy, our Kalaam Team will be screening low income families. We'll be offering to sponsor families, providing them with food packages, and/or funding micro businesses. Our goal is to provide long term, sustainable care.

Afghanistan has the highest number of people facing critical health insecurity in Asia. Over 23 million Afghans (more than half the population) live below the poverty line. (UNDP, 2024). 97% of Afghans are at risk of falling below the poverty line due to economic collapse. (UNDP), and medicine prices have increased by up to 80% in the last two years due to sanctions and supply chain disruption. (Afghanistan Analysts Network)
